Roger Deakins is a cinematographer ( photographer Coen brothers) born in Torquay Devon, England in May 1949.
Roger is the son of a builder and an actress, and since an early age became interested in painting, which led him to enroll in his teens at the School of Art and Design in Bath, where he studied graphic design . In these years, emerges his love for fotograía, which became a virtuoso. So much so, that his home town Torquay, urged him to make documentary photography on this enclave. After the exquisite result of that documentary, National Film & Television School as given scholarships to study there . And he did during 2 years and when completed s and become specialized in documentaries camera, so you had more than 7 travelers throughout the world. Thanks to a documentary about a long-term competeción offshore yachts won several awards and was called to do a few jobs in Africa. These stresses Erirtrea, speaking about political conflicts and wars between Sudan, Djibouti and Ethiopia.
After finishing his time in continete African experience granbado video-clips of Van Morrison among others, and begin their first steps as a director of photography for the film among his works of this period include 1984 (Roger Corman, 1984) and Mountains of the Moon (Bob Rafaelson, 1990). Latter work that makes the Coen brothers not trust in their work and call for their next movie Barton Fink (1991). From here it becomes almost exclusively (except in Burn After Reading) in their usual photographer (in the last of these True Grit, True Grit is also the photographer). But not only the man lives Coen and Roger has been itching from flower to flower in the most diverse jobs and personal with top directors like Sam Mendes (Jarehead, Revolutionary Road), Martin Scrosese (Kundun ) Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption), M. Night Shyamalan (The Forest), Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) and Paul Haggis (In the Valley of Ellah).
His years in black Africa have been used to investigate especially in the arid, desert or sub-desert, achieved levels of expertise as those of Freddie Young, Jack Hildyard and Nestor Almendros. In these studies highlight The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (Andrew Dominik, 2007), a photographic work is extremely complex, because the film is a docu-drama mixed with ficcón, with high levels of realism and which outweigh the silences words and empty spaces than full. But mostly I like it because is innovative and evolutionary history of this photographic art, and for me, a gentleman who wore almost 60 years in the film is very admirable. Besides warm glow on the landscape, it also has very good hand for everything else, even the antithesis of heat, snow, as we see in Fargo or doubt.
Roger Deakins has been nominated to 9 times without success to Oscar yet (this year is nominated for True Grit, True Grit).
